Ford Hybrid Sales Statistics and Recent U.S. Growth

Ford’s U.S. hybrid sales accelerated through 2024. Ford reported 187,426 hybrid vehicles sold during the 2024 calendar year, a record and a 40% increase over 2023; the figure excludes plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles.

Ford also reported 285,291 U.S. electrified-vehicle sales in 2024, up 38% year over year. That broader total combines hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, so it should not be compared directly with the hybrid-only figure.

Hybrid vehicles 2024 187,426; +40%
Electrified vehicles 2024 285,291; +38%

Ford said hybrid-truck share was an estimated 76% of the U.S. hybrid-truck segment in 2024. This is a segment-share estimate, not Ford’s share of all U.S. hybrid sales, and Ford’s broader U.S. retail sales increased 6% for the year and 17% in Q4 2024.

Quarterly momentum was already visible in early 2024. Ford described Q1 2024 as its best-ever hybrid-sales quarter in more than two decades of offering hybrids, while Ford and Lincoln total U.S. sales increased 7% across all powertrains.

Ford’s integrated-report data separates worldwide retail HEV, PHEV and ZEV categories. HEV means Ford’s hybrid-emission-vehicle category in this dataset; PHEVs and ZEVs are separate populations.

Worldwide retail category 2021 2022 2023
HEV 126,663 156,397 204,664
PHEV 64,460 80,063 71,766
ZEV 55,692 108,567 130,905
HEV + PHEV + ZEV total 246,815 345,027 407,335

The HEV series rose from 126,663 worldwide retail vehicles in 2021 to 156,397 in 2022 and 204,664 in 2023. The PHEV series increased from 64,460 in 2021 to 80,063 in 2022, then declined to 71,766 in 2023.

ZEV retail sales increased from 55,692 in 2021 to 108,567 in 2022 and 130,905 in 2023. Ford’s combined electrified total increased from 246,815 to 345,027 and then 407,335 across those three years, but the total includes three unlike powertrain categories.

Ford separately said it sold about 700,000 hybrids worldwide over the approximately three years preceding its 2023 earnings statement. That is an estimate with a broad period description, not a detailed annual series.

F-150 and Maverick Hybrid Truck Sales

Ford’s strongest U.S. hybrid volume is concentrated in pickup trucks. In 2024, the company sold 73,845 F-150 Hybrid trucks and 68,752 Maverick Hybrid trucks in the United States.

Hybrid truck model 2023 U.S. sales 2024 U.S. sales Reported change
F-150 Hybrid 50,103 73,845 +47% in 2024; +41% in 2023
Maverick Hybrid 52,361 68,752 +31% in 2024; +67% in 2023

F-150 Hybrid sales were 50,103 in 2023, up 41% from the prior year, before reaching 73,845 in 2024. Maverick Hybrid sales were 52,361 in 2023, up 67%, and Ford said the hybrid variant accounted for more than half of total Maverick sales that year.

Total Maverick sales increased 26.5% in 2023, a broader model result that includes non-hybrid trucks. The hybrid-specific figures should therefore be kept separate from the total-model growth rate.

In Q1 2024, Maverick Hybrid sales reached 19,660 U.S. trucks, up 77% from Q1 2023. Ford called Maverick America’s No.

Ford Hybrid Adoption by Quarter, Model and Market Position

Quarterly and monthly data show adoption building before the 2024 annual record. Ford reported 37,229 hybrid vehicles sold in Q4 2023, up 55% year over year, and said annual U.S. hybrid sales rose 25% to a record level in 2023.

Ford’s November 2023 sales table reported 12,108 hybrid vehicles, up 75.2% from November 2022’s 6,910. January–November 2023 hybrid sales reached 121,777, up 22.7% year to date.

The same release reported total Ford and Lincoln vehicle sales of 145,559 in November 2023 versus 146,364 in November 2022. That all-powertrain comparison provides scale for the hybrid line but is not a hybrid-only measure.

Ford ranked No. 3 among U.S. hybrid brands in 2023, according to its proxy statement.

It also said its global hybrid sales rose approximately 20% in 2023 and that Maverick and F-150 were the No. 1 and No.

2 hybrid trucks in the United States, respectively; the ranking language refers to Ford’s own reported position, and “produced” differs from retail-sales wording.

Ford Hybrid Powertrains, Fuel Economy and Industry Context

EPA figures provide industry context rather than Ford model test results. For model year 2024, EPA estimated average new-vehicle real-world fuel economy at 27.2 mpg in the U.S. light-duty market, up 0.1 mpg from the prior model year.

Average new-vehicle fuel economy improved in 16 of the 20 model years ending in 2024 and was 41% higher than in model year 2004. EPA also estimated that, without battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, the 2024 average would have been 1.7 mpg lower; that counterfactual isolates BEV/PHEV influence, not conventional HEV influence.

EPA industry measure Period Result
Average real-world fuel economy MY2024 27.2 mpg
Improvement from prior model year MY2024 vs. MY2023 +0.1 mpg
Improvement over earlier baseline MY2004 to MY2024 +41%
Improvement in recent model years 20 model years ending MY2024 16 years improved

The regulatory vehicle mix was 34% cars and 66% trucks in model year 2024, while truck SUVs accounted for half of all new-vehicle production. Truck-SUV fuel economy increased 1.0 mpg to 25.7 mpg in that model year.

Within car SUVs, 30% of production was battery-electric and another 3% was plug-in hybrid in model year 2024. EPA’s decomposition attributed a 9.0-mpg car-SUV fuel-economy increase to BEVs and PHEVs together; this is a category effect, not a Ford-specific test result.

Finally, EPA reported that mild hybrids represented about 40% of hybrid production in model year 2023. Mild hybrids are not equivalent to full HEVs or PHEVs, so the production statistic should not be merged with Ford’s sales categories.
